Pappy's Smokehouse
About This Spot
Stepping into Pappy’s Smokehouse feels like a local secret unfolding—an unhurried pulse of anticipation mingling with smoky warmth. Nestled just a few blocks from the iconic St. Louis Arch, the modest exterior and steady line out front invite you in without fuss. Inside, the atmosphere hums with the quiet energy of friends and families drawn together by a shared love of deeply smoked, hearty barbecue.
The pace here moves with a calm rhythm, shaped by the simple joy of waiting your turn but knowing well it will be worth it. The walls, adorned with blues-themed artwork, echo stories of the city’s rich musical roots and the kind of soul that finds its way into every tender rack of ribs or smoky bite of brisket. This is a place where the food does the talking — no distractions needed.
There is a patient kind of craftsmanship in how the smoke flavors are coaxed from apple and cherry wood, softening the presence without overwhelming, allowing the natural richness of the pork ribs, brisket, and pulled pork to breathe. Each bite carries a careful balance of seasoning, with that delicate crunch where the bark meets the tender meat. It’s this subtle dance between smoky depth and juicy tenderness that draws people back again and again.
At Pappy’s, the sides don’t just fill a plate — they complete the conversation. From crisply sweet fire-and-ice pickles to creamy baked beans and golden fries, each element adds its own texture and comfort. The soda options—especially the nostalgic fizz of Fitz’s Root Beer—and the classic southern sweet tea make the meal easy and familiar, like old friends gathered around a table.
What guests find here is more than just a meal; it’s a shared moment anchored in simple, well-done barbecue. The laughter spilling from tables, the sight of plates cleared of every last juicy morsel, and the quiet satisfaction that lingers even after the last crumb speaks of a place that’s more about people and memories than just the food.

Stopped in while visiting the Arch this weekend and the ribs did not dissappoint! First thing I noticed was all the cars which was a good sign. I was able to find parking in the back lot which was nice. We waited in line for about 30 mins but it was worth it. My sister had the burnt end sandwich which was good while I had the ribs which were amazing! They were so juicy and came off the bone nicely. Ribs were the best I've ever had next to my son's smoked ribs. I was wondering how they keep up with the demand for food considering all the people coming in and noticed 5 giant smokers which take care of business. Very cool to see! Also of note the ordering and delivery of you order is very organized. Great food and service!

Pappy's for the first time and was not disappointed in the ribs actually they were phenomenal. They use fruit wood like apple or cherry to smoke so the smoke flavor is not overwhelming like some places that use hickory or mesquite. A half rack is 6 ribs, which had a LOT of meat on them. These are pork back ribs. The meat was tender amazing! you have 4 sauces to chose from, but I only tried the sweet, which was excellent. Not too sweet, good flavor with the ribs. The burnt ends so freaking tender mouth watering! The baked beans were good but the fried corn is must get! Service was great and pricing was super awesome! 100% recommend!

**Ribs: I was able to have ribs on second visit. The season deeply soaked into meat and well balanced with salty and subtle sweetness, coating made crunchy. Half of half rack, i ate by itself without additional sauce on it, and it was still good. Meat was very tender and my husband flip and pull bones, it came out clean. I usually go to Barbecue for beef briskets, i was not get used to get paper thin brisket slices. It is rather shock! Ribs were not available yesterday, we had a brisket ends for another plate. I hate to see this edge part has its own menu, having brisket was worst choice, not to mention paper thin slice, losing edge part to for it’s own menu. I liked the sausage and sides.

Good BBQ. I am happy we chose to go, we were impressed. We had ribs, fried corn and fire and ice pickles. The ribs were great. Cooked well, good ring and they tasted good. The corn was ok, they have other sides to pick. but my favorite thing we ate were ther fire and ice pickles!!Addicting!!!

Fantastic food! I see why their ribs were rated #1 in the US. Lots of cool Blues Themed artwork adorning the hallway as you wait in line. The menus are available in the hallway so be ready to order when you get to the front. The cashier takes your order you pay and tip at the register. Tips are pooled and shared among staff. And don't sleep on the cookies. They are amazing!!

If you’re thinking about Pappy’s—just go. And if you’re not? Go anyway. We waited about 40 minutes in line on a Sunday afternoon, and it was absolutely worth it. The ribs were some of the best I’ve ever had—smoky, tender, and packed with flavor. The brisket was juicy, the sides had fun twists on the classics, and the lineup of sauces was on point. The service was incredible—friendly, fast, and efficient. Once we were seated, our food came out almost instantly. On top of all that, it’s extremely reasonably priced for the quality. An absolute must if you're in St. Louis.

Got the brisket with sweet potato fries and pickles. My friend got the ribs and corn. Both were good, very tender. The sauce was also really nice (I tried all four and we really liked the spicy one the most). The lineup was long when we got there but it was pretty quick, I think we had a 20-30 minute wait so not too bad (I once waited for an hour at a different BBQ place). Placed our orders and food came out pretty quickly. The staff was really nice and recommended the sides (was not disappointed). The inside had plenty of seating and had cool decorations, I think newspaper clippings or some articles lined the walls. Overall, had a good experience and would definitely come back.

Where have these ribs been my whole life? You know you’re in luck when you walk in and they’re carting a huge stack of ribs in from the smoker. I love BBQ, but I rarely order ribs because they never blow me away. But after taking a recommendation from a local who was waiting ahead of us, I ordered the half-rack with baked beans and the fried corn on the cob. We also got the mouth-watering brisket. UNBELIEVABLE! The meat is so tender, but stays on the bone until you want it to fall off. The flavor packs a punch, so much so, I didn’t need any sauce—though I tried a couple flavors. I’m so glad I tried the fried corn on the cob, because it was a good compliment to the richness of the ribs. Service was organized and FAST! I cannot recommend this place enough!
